Muhammad Ali is one of the biggest living athletes. He was the champion as a heavyweight boxer. He irritated his competitors a lot with his big mouth. Outside the ring, Ali fought for civil rights and against prejudice. Today, “The Greatest” turns 70 years old.

He is the greatest living legend of this sport, the ultimate champion, a man of superlatives. The best description is to be expected as no different from Muhammad Ali himself: “I am the double-greatest,” says the three-time world champion in the heavyweight division. Modesty has never been the strength of the former boxer.

It fits him, too, that the birthday celebrating is not taking place just in the little circle, only with his wife and children. If the “astronaut of boxing” (also on Ali Ali) invites you, that is a day off a week.

On Tuesday, in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky – many guests already gathered on Saturday in the Muhammad Ali Center to congratulate the former boxer. Than there he was on a balcony in the lobby surged from thunderous applause. The crowd chanted “Ali, Ali” and  “Happy Birthday”. Ali himself is looking forward to his birthday with mixed feelings, says his wife, Lonnie. “He is happy that he reaches his 70th birthday, but he wants to hear that he does not look like 70.”

Because of his progressive Parkinson’s disease, Ali was last seen less and less in the public. The former world heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis said that his childhood idol was also the greatest. “I am so proud that we must support him,” Lewis said. “He is truly a great man”.
